2020 Visions Author #2 – Sheila Finch

I met Sheila Finch in Tempe, Arizona last year at Westercon.  Sheila and I were the only two members to attend the scheduled SFWA meeting, but since two members does not meet quorum, we just sat and chatted for the hour.

Sheila’s reputation as a writer precedes her.   The 1998 Nebula Award in the novella category was awarded to her for “Reading the Bones,”  and she has also won awards for young adult fiction.

I found Sheila to be a charming person, and I was thrilled when she sent me a story for 2020 Visions.  “The Persistence of Butterflies” might be a little bit farther down the road than a mere ten years, but the premise is such a thoughtful extrapolation of a future in which global warming is starting to have ramifications that I had to include it in the collection.

The story is set in an America losing the battle against the rising oceans, and the country’s mood is bleak.  One man working toward a solution refuses to have his hopes destroyed.  This is the story of that man.

Sheila blogged about the story sale here.
