I kicked off the Thursday Thoughts meme by going through the 12 points of the scout law. Today, we hit point number 6, a scout is kind.
Kindness. Some people are naturally inclined toward it, others have to work at it. But when you get right down to it, most people are pretty decent.
I believe in karma, and that the better you treat others, the better you will be treated. It’s the little things like picking up and handing back that item a stranger dropped, or holding the door for someone. Sometimes it’s the surprise gift for a family member, or even as simple as complimenting an author whose work you enjoy. Or more difficult, intervening when nobody else will.
I don;t know where the kindness goes when people get behind the wheel of a car, though. That glass and metal box seems to strip humanity away, insulating people from any direct contact with others, much in the way the internet does the same. A little impromptu kindness in both would do the world a great deal of good.
We can’t change that, but we can change our own behavior. Being kind doesn’t take that much effort.
