Story Research

One thing that I like about writing SF/F is the research necessary to get the details right. As it turns out, Windows 10 has the useful capability to keep several desktops separate. That means I can keep more than one project open and not clutter the space with unrelated browser windows. That’s not to say anyone but me would consider the windows related. The story I recently finished had me researching a certain Native American tribe and extinct North American species. The one I’m currently writing has me researching black holes and nuns.

But that’s really part of the beauty of writing. I want to learn about something, or I wonder what would happen if, and a quick Google search gets me reading and digging deeper. The reader only sees a small fraction of the research, but the research allows a level of competence the reader can sense. Readers are smart, and they can tell if the writer is faking it.
